Muslims believe aside from explaining the meritorious and blameworthy acts within Islam, the Prophet left a legacy applicable to all of humanity. Through his words, he taught love, companionship, mercy, justice and other qualities that form the building blocks of a society. The following is a short selection of his sayings:
- "Religion is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive good tidings that you will be rewarded."
- "God does not judge you according to your bodies and appearances, but He looks into your hearts and observes deeds."
- "The finest of you, are those most beautiful in character."
- "None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself."
- "It is better for a leader to make a mistake in forgiving than to make a mistake in punishing."
- "Make things easy and do not make them difficult; give glad tidings and do not cause people to flee."
- "The best amongst you is he who is the most kind to his family, and I am the kindest amongst you to my family."
- "Anyone who believes in God and the Last Day (of Judgment) should not harm his neighbor. Anyone who believes in God and the Last Day should entertain his guest generously. And anyone who believes in God and the Last Day should say what is good or keep quiet."
- "Sometimes I enter prayer and I intend to prolong it, but then I hear a child crying, and I shorten my prayer thinking of the distress of the child's mother."
- "Verily are actions by intention, and for everyone is that which one intended..."
- "Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, God makes easy for him/her a path to Paradise."
- "All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action."
-"The most Merciful [God] shows mercy to those who are merciful to others. Be merciful to those on earth, and He in heaven shall be merciful to you."
